Forbidden Rhythm

Forbidden Rhythm is a great game for students to practice their recognition of rhythmic patterns. It is a cross between ‘echo clapping’ and Simon Says’. It can be used as a warm up, cool down – or as a quick ‘brain gym’ exercise to refresh attention during any learning session.

  • The teacher announces there is to be a forbidden rhythm and claps a four beat pattern (to make it easier the rhythmic pattern can be written on the board).
  • The teacher now performs various rhythm patterns, which the class are asked to ‘echo clap’. If the teacher performs the forbidden rhythm students should stay still and not echo the pattern.
  • Any student who claps the forbidden rhythm is eliminated.

This simple game can also be used to determine who needs more support with rhythmic pattern recognition.
